"How long should I stay in a sauna?" is one of the most common questions from people new to heat bathing, and it deserves a clear answer rather than a vague "until you feel like getting out". The honest reply is that there is a sensible range, most people settle within it, and the research offers some genuinely useful guidance at the margins.

This article is about per-session duration: how many minutes you spend inside on a single visit. That is a distinct question from how many times a week you should sauna, which we cover separately. Here we look at typical session lengths, what a large Finnish study found about session duration and cardiovascular outcomes, what actually happens to your body over a session, and how to choose a duration that is both effective and safe.

A note before we begin: much of the strongest evidence comes from observational cohorts of Finnish men. These studies show associations, not cause and effect, and your own tolerance depends on your age, health, hydration and how accustomed you are to heat. Use the numbers below as orientation, not as targets to push towards.

Typical and traditional session lengths

In traditional Finnish practice, a single stint in the hot room usually lasts somewhere between 5 and 20 minutes, often broken up by cooling off and returning for another round. There is nothing magical about hitting the upper end of that range. A shorter session that leaves you feeling refreshed is far better than a longer one that leaves you light-headed. The goal is a pleasant, sustainable heat exposure, not an endurance test.

What the dose-response cohort data show

The most cited evidence on session length comes from the Finnish Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, which followed 2,315 middle-aged men for a median of around 20 years. Alongside its well-known findings on sauna frequency, the study also examined how long each session lasted 2.

Compared with men whose sessions lasted less than 11 minutes, those with sessions longer than 19 minutes had an adjusted hazard ratio for sudden cardiac death of 0.48 (95% confidence interval 0.31-0.75), with a significant trend across the three duration groups 2. Inverse associations were also seen for fatal coronary heart disease and fatal cardiovascular disease. In plain terms, within this population, longer sessions tracked with lower cardiovascular risk.

It is important to read this carefully. This is an observational association: the men who sat longer may have differed in other ways, and the finding does not mean that forcing yourself to stay in longer will lower your personal risk. What happens to your body over a session

As you sit in the heat, your skin and core temperature rise, blood vessels dilate, heart rate climbs and you begin to sweat. The cardiovascular load has been compared to low-to-moderate intensity exercise. In studies of blood pressure, sauna exposure lowered vascular resistance, with effects on haemodynamics persisting for up to two hours afterwards 4.

That same physiology explains why the minutes after you stand up matter. Because blood vessels are dilated and you have lost fluid through sweat, blood pressure can drop when you rise or move to a cold plunge, occasionally causing dizziness. This is why the end of a long session, not the middle, is often the riskiest moment, and why easing out slowly is worthwhile.

Guidance for beginners versus experienced bathers

If you are new to the sauna, start conservatively: 5-10 minutes on a lower bench, then step out. Over subsequent visits you can extend towards the 15-20 minute range if it feels comfortable. Acclimatisation is real, and what feels intense in week one becomes routine within a few weeks.

Experienced bathers often cycle through two or three rounds of 10-15 minutes with cooling breaks in between, which is a comfortable way to accumulate more total heat exposure without any single stint becoming excessive. Safety limits and when to get out

No number on a clock overrides how you feel. Leave the sauna immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, faint, unusually breathless or simply unwell, regardless of how many minutes have passed. Drink water before and after, avoid alcohol before bathing, and be cautious in the days you are ill, dehydrated or sleep-deprived.

Older adults, people who are pregnant, and anyone with cardiovascular disease, low blood pressure or other medical conditions should keep sessions shorter and speak to a clinician before making the sauna a habit. The review literature notes that while sauna bathing is well tolerated by most healthy people, combining intense heat with sudden cold immersion can provoke marked blood pressure swings, so transitions deserve respect 1.
