Cortisol has become the internet's favourite villain. Blamed for stubborn belly fat, broken sleep, burnout and most things in between, it is now the hormone people most want to lower. So it is a fair question to put to the sauna: does sitting in the heat calm your stress hormones, or does it simply pile more stress onto a body that already has plenty?
The honest answer depends on the timescale. Heat is a stressor — that is precisely why it works — and a single hot session behaves very differently from a habit built over weeks and months. Conflating the two is where most of the confusion comes from.
Here is what the peer-reviewed evidence actually shows about sauna bathing and cortisol, the mechanisms behind it, and how to use the heat so that it builds stress resilience rather than eroding it.
What cortisol actually is
Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone released by your adrenal glands under the direction of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. It is not inherently harmful. It mobilises glucose, sharpens attention, helps regulate blood pressure and follows a daily rhythm: high in the morning to get you moving, low at night to let you sleep. Problems appear when cortisol is chronically elevated or when that rhythm flattens, both of which are markers of poor stress regulation.
The goal, then, is not zero cortisol; it is a responsive, well-regulated HPA axis that switches on when needed and off when it is not. Keep that distinction in mind, because it explains how the sauna can raise cortisol in the moment and still improve your stress profile over time.
Why a single sauna session can nudge cortisol up
When you sit in an 80–100°C room, your core temperature climbs and your body treats the heat load as a challenge to be managed. Heart rate rises, blood vessels dilate and the HPA axis can respond by releasing cortisol — the same broad signal you would see after a hard workout. For this reason, exercise physiologists often use cortisol as a sensitive marker of thermal strain rather than as a problem in itself. In a controlled study of trained runners and non-athletes, researchers put participants through a single 15-minute Finnish sauna session at roughly 96°C and tracked cortisol alongside immune markers precisely because it reflects how hard the body is working to cope with the heat 1.
Reviews of the wider literature note that this acute cortisol response is variable and depends heavily on the type and intensity of the exposure: a very hot, prolonged session with no cool-down is more likely to raise it than a moderate one 4. In other words, a short-term bump is normal, expected and not something to be alarmed by.
What regular sauna use does to your baseline
The more interesting question is what happens when heat exposure becomes a routine, and here the direction of travel changes. In a controlled trial of 30 young men, four 12-minute sauna rounds at 90–91°C, each followed by a one-minute cold-water immersion, produced a significant fall in serum cortisol — from 13.61 to 9.67 µg/dL across roughly 72 minutes of treatment (p<.001) 2.
A broad systematic review of 40 clinical studies covering more than 3,800 participants reached a similar conclusion: across repeated sauna sessions, serum cortisol and ACTH — the pituitary signal that drives cortisol — tended to decrease, while growth hormone and prolactin rose 3. The pattern is consistent with hormesis: a manageable, repeated stressor teaches the HPA axis to respond efficiently and then stand down, rather than staying stuck in the on position. It also sits alongside the broader case that regular heat exposure lowers resting inflammation, another marker of a calmer physiological baseline.
The dose decides the direction
None of this means more heat is always better. The cortisol response is dose-dependent, and the variables that matter are temperature, duration, how heat-adapted you already are, and whether you build in cooling breaks. A punishing 25-minute session at maximum heat, taken by someone unaccustomed to it, looks a lot like overtraining and can drive cortisol up rather than down. A moderate session, repeated consistently, is what the favourable data are built on.
Heat adaptation matters too. As your body becomes accustomed to sauna bathing, the same exposure provokes a smaller stress response — and that adaptation is itself part of the benefit, the physiological equivalent of getting fitter so a given effort feels easier.
Realistic expectations
So, does the sauna lower cortisol? Over a single session, not reliably — and it may briefly raise it, which is normal. Across weeks of consistent, sensibly dosed use, the evidence points towards lower resting cortisol and a better-regulated stress response. The sauna is best understood as a training tool for your stress physiology, not a sedative you take once and expect to feel instantly calmer.
It also pairs well with the things that unambiguously help — sleep, unhurried breathing and time away from screens — all of which the enforced stillness of a sauna quietly encourages. Two caveats worth stating plainly: the randomised-trial evidence base is still small, and if you are pregnant, managing cardiovascular disease or taking medication that affects blood pressure, check with your doctor before starting a heat routine.
