In a controlled study of young men immersed in water at 14°C, plasma noradrenaline rose by roughly 530% and dopamine by about 250% relative to baseline 1. What happens in the brain — and to mood — straight after

It is a reason for measured optimism, not evangelism.
Realistic expectations
So, does a cold plunge improve your mood? On the current evidence, briefly and fairly reliably yes — most people feel more alert and less tense soon after, and the neurochemistry gives that experience a solid mechanistic footing. Whether it delivers lasting change depends on consistency: the durable benefits in the data belong to people who make cold exposure a routine, not a one-off dare.
